After playing 34 games undefeated between May 27, 1999 and March 16, 2011, Australia lost their first game. Australia had lost to Pakistan by 10 runs at Edgbaston on May 23, 1999.

Lee, for the first time, captured four wickets in consecutive matches at the World Cup - 4 for 46 against Canada in Bangalore on March 16 followed by 4 for 28 against Pakistan in Colombo on March 19.
