Czech left-hander Kvitova, the seventh seed, was beaten 6-1 6-2 by Germany's 11th seed Andrea Petkovic, while 10th-seeded Australian Sam Stosur also steps forward to the quarter-finals by overcoming Chinese sixth seed Li 6-2 6-4.

Fourth seed Victoria Azarenka bucked the trend of falling high seeds, as the 22-year-old from Belarus beat Spain's Maria Jose Sanchez Martinez 6-1 6-2. She is the highest seed remaining in the competition. Serena Williams, unseeded after missing most of the last year due to injury, was in problem against China's Jie Zheng but came through 4-6 6-3 6-3.
