Andreas Seppi got his Kremlin Cup battle off to a fine start as he battled back from behind to defeat home favourite Igor Andreev in three sets. Seppi needed two hours and five minutes to repel his world number 115-ranked opponent, with Andreev taking the first set before the Italian held his nerve to go through 2-6 6-3 7-6 (7-4).Igor Kunitsyn also required three sets to beat associate Russian Andrey Kuznetsov 7-5 4-6 6-3, while Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin edged past the Czech Republic's Lukas Rosol 7-6 (7-5) 7-5.

Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili defeated another Czech, Karol Beck, 6-2 6-4 while Spain's Pere Riba also reached the second round with a 6-2 6-7 (7-1) 6-3 win over Austria's Andreas Haider-Maurer. In the women's first round, seventh seed Roberta Vinci was an early victim as she fell 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 to Vera Dushevina. There were also wins for Nadia Petrova, Kaia Kanepi and Bojana Jovanovski.
