Petra Kvitova beat Victoria Azarenka to win the season-ending WTA Championships in Istanbul and in the route move up to second in the world rankings. The 21-year-old Czech, who won her first grand slam title at Wimbledon this year, defeated her Belarusian opponent 7-5 4-6 6-3 in today's final to claim her sixth title of the year and as a result rises to a career-high in the world rankings - having ended 2010 outside the top 30.
Kvitova was more creative on her first serve and formed three aces to Azarenka's none but there was little to choose between the pair who was both consistent. Both showed good defence on their serve, Kvitova fending off five of Azarenka's nine break points with the world number four repelling seven from 12 break chances.
