Chris Gayle has been selected by West Indies for the first time in 14 months as part of their ODI squad to tour England later this month. The 32-year-old opener, whose public spat with the West Indies Cricket Board resulted in him being disqualified for nearly a year, was included in a 15-man squad announced on Monday for the three-match series that begins on June 16. The powerful left-hander is the most productive West Indian in ODIs, with 19 hundreds in 228 matches since his debut in 1999.

But Gayle played his last match for West Indies on March 23, 2011, the quarter-final defeat to Pakistan in the World Cup. He was critical of the WICB in a radio interview in April 2011 after being lost from the subsequent one-day series at home against Pakistan. Those comments, much aggressive to current coach Ottis Gibson, led to his lengthy spell out of the team. Gayle instead played profitable Twenty20 tournaments in India, Zimbabwe, Australia and Bangladesh.

The squad is again led by Darren Sammy and includes a number of players who were recently playing in the Indian Premier League, which clashed with the present Test series in England. One of them, Dwayne Bravo, returns as vice captain while fellow all rounder Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell and Dwayne Smith also boost the squad. Opener Lendl Simmons is chosen again after recovering from a finger injury that ruled him out of the home series against Australia in March.

Squad:

Darren Sammy (captain), Dwayne Bravo (vice captain), Tino Best, Darren Bravo, Johnson Charles, Fidel Edwards, Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin (wicketkeeper), Ravi Rampaul, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Lendl Simmons, Dwayne Smith.

England won their seventh successive home series as they made grand work of their target of 108 to win the second Test at Trent Bridge by nine wickets with more than a day to spare. Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook made the game safe in an opening stand of 89 after dismissing West Indies for 165 shortly after lunch on another day in Nottingham.

A hard-earned but ultimately forceful victory put England 2-0 up with Edgbaston to play, but they are under no illusions that the real challenge lies in wait later this summer with the visit of South Africa. West Indies restricted the first-innings deficit to 58, only for a crazed batting session on the third evening to stop them contesting the Test eagerly deep into the final day.

Strauss, naturally, was the more confident of England's openers after centuries in the first two Tests and three boundaries in an over; including two pulls, in Kemar Roach's third over, assert that there would be no final twist. England's captain, though, did not quite see his side home, out for 41 as Marlon Samuels picked up a soft wicket when he drove a full ball to extra cover.

England finished an astral summer with an uncomfortable 25-run defeat in the second of two Twenty20 matches against West Indies at The Oval. Set just 114 to win, the home side collapsed to 88 all out in 16.4 overs, baffled by four run-outs and a fine spell from debutant left-arm spinner Garey Mathurin who took three for nine in his four overs.

It was England`s lowest score in a Twenty20, 23 runs worse than their previous lowest against South Africa two years ago. England had won the first game on Friday by 10 wickets and looked set for another easy victory as only Marlon Samuels with 35 in 35 balls showed much fire. The visitors could only gather 113-5 and no less than half the balls faced proved to be dot balls.

But Mathurin, called to the squad only a week ago as a late replacement, turned the tide and England lost wickets frequently with only Ben Stokes (31) providing much fight. It was a disappointing end to the season for England after hugely winning campaigns all over the summer against India and Sri Lanka.
