George Groves has been enforced to withdraw from his bout at the Liverpool Echo Arena on December 9 because of a hand injury. The 23-year-old, who has enjoyed an astral year with wins over huge rival James DeGale and Paul Smith, suffered the injury in a training session this week in London and he has now been ruled out of his next contest - for which an opponent had yet to be named. DeGale's WBO Intercontinental title against Jose Maria Guerrero will now caption the bill and a further fight could be added to the card.

He said: "I'm really gutted as I was coming along nicely in training and on course for the fight in a couple of weeks' time."The injury is a setback and I really required to end the year with four good wins."I'm sorry that my fans won't be able to see me in action, but I'll back early next year and ready to kick of 2012 with bang as I continue towards further titles."Groves' manager and trainer Adam Booth was also disappointed at the news.

"Obviously we are all disappointed as George was looking forward to getting back into the ring again so quickly after his great win over Paul Smith."At this stage of George's career it would be crazy to cooperation him and carry an injury of that nature into the fight."He's been advised to rest it for now and we'll seek further medical guidance next week."

Five-time World champion Mary Kom punched her way to a gold medal in the 51kg category, defeating Pinki Jangra in the final on the final day of the 12th Senior Women's National Boxing Championships in Bhopal. In the day's most-anticipated bout, the Manipur ace show a class above Arafura Games gold medallist Pinki, from Haryana, in the final of the flyweight separation, at the Tatya Tope stadium.

Mary Kom thus avenged her 2009 National Championships loss to Pinki, also known as giant-killer in the boxing circuit. Both boxers opened carefully, measuring each other before making a move. The score was 1-1 after the opening round, but from the start of the second, the World champion, with a calculative counter-attack, slowly increased the margin. By the end of the second and third rounds, Mary had established a slender lead of one point -- 3:2, 4:3.

In the final round the 28-year-old switched gears and became more hateful while maintaining a steady defence to reclaim the national crown after a three-year gap. The final score read: 13:9. There was better news for Manipur as Youth World champion Sarjubala Devi capped a dazzling performance, claiming the crown in the light-flyweight division. Up against local girl and National Games silver medalist Krishna Thapa, Sarjubala was down by six points after the first three rounds. But in the final round she made a dramatic fightback, launching an attack to which Krishna had no reply.

Lee Westwood says he's dissatisfied that another chance to win a major slipped away in the USPGA Championship in Atlanta on Sunday. The 38-year-old world number two completed joint eighth in Atlanta and has now unsuccessful to top the final standings in 55 attempts to win a big one.

As he headed off to a 10-day holiday in Barbados his next event is the European Masters in Switzerland from September 1 to 4 - he said: "I have enjoyed playing great for a long time now."But unhappily when I turn up to majors and don't win one it's a disappointing week for everybody it seems - and obviously for me. That's the sort of level of golf I'm playing at."

The Swiss event, which will also have Rory McIlroy - arm injury permitting - in the field, is the start of Ryder Cup qualifying and there will be more contest than ever it seems. Dane Anders Hansen was third at the PGA, Swede Robert Karlsson joint fourth. There are two more names to throw into the mix.
