The Delhi police is gearing up for the first match of the World Cup at Ferozeshah Kotla after inputs from security agencies to be "on the alert". "We have no exact fear threat, but we cannot take any chance. The fact that two Test playing nations - South Africa and West Indies will be clashing on Thursday means we are expecting a reasonable crowd of 45,000 on January 24," a senior security wing officer said.

According to the police, 12 companies of police force will be on duty in and around Kotla on Thursday. "We have decided to keep on duty five DCP-level officers under the charge of a joint commissioner and extra commissioners. Besides the usual door frame metal detectors and hand-held metal detectors, we will also organize our dog squad.

"We will shut down the stadium for all people not carrying proper ID cards 72 hours before the beginning of the match. Besides the central district police and the DAP forces, the security wing which provides security to the Prime Minister and President of India will be in charge of the security of the players at the hotel, inside the team bus and the emerald room. Gate numbers 1 and 2 have been reserved for players, officials and senior DDCA officials," said the officer.

The security is expected to go up several notches on March 9 when India play at the venue. Traffic police too has made elaborate arrangements for parking of vehicles, traffic circulation, pedestrians' movement and safety of the visitors in and around the stadium. "There is very limited parking – 450 cars - - for labeled vehicles in the proximity of the stadium."
