The Kolkata Knight Riders may have completed fourth in the Indian Premier League this year. A record 13 teams will be seen in action in this year’s CLT20, which will be held Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore from September 19 to October 9.A six-team qualifier will be played in Hyderabad from September 19 to 21 to decide the last three teams that qualify for the main event.
Three teams from the qualifying stage will join the seven who’ve already qualified. The Kolkata Knight Riders, the Caribbean T20 champions Trinidad and Tobago and the HRV Cup New Zealand’s domestic Twenty20 title-winners Auckland Aces will take part in the qualifiers. The champions of Sri Lanka Premier League and two from England will join them. However, the format for the qualifiers is yet to be decided.
The qualifiers clash with the third Test between Sri Lanka and Australia. In that case, KKR might be deprived of the Aussie players on national duty. Bangalore will host the inaugural match of the third edition on September 23, it will also host a semi-final. Chennai will host a semi-final and the final slated on October 9.
The seven teams that have automatically qualified are IPL champions and defending CL T20 champions Chennai Super Kings, IPL runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore, third placed Mumbai Indians. The other four teams are South Australian Redbacks and New South Wales Blues from Australia, Warriors and Cape Cobras from South Africa.
