Sri Lanka vice-captain Angelo Mathews will miss the opening Test against England after failing a fitness Test. All-rounder Mathews has been left out of a 14-man squad for the series opener in Galle, starting on March 26, after fault to recover from a calf muscle trouble that saw him return home early from the Asia Cup. And Sri Lanka's chief selector Asantha de Mel believes Mathews may now have to give up his medium-pace bowling in order to safeguard his international future as a specialist batsman.
Thilan Samaraweera will replace Mathews as skipper Mahela Jayawardene's deputy. Sri Lanka has named three openers, Tharanga Paranavitana and Lahiru Thirimanne fighting it out for the right to partner Tillakaratne Dilshan, while the wicket keeping spot is between Prasanna Jayawardene and Dinesh Chandimal. The second match of the two-Test series takes place in Colombo from April 3-7.
